Weekly Women’s Update

Welcome to this edition of the Council on Women and Girls weekly highlights. This week, President Obama emphasized the administration’s goal to win the future by visiting with innovators in business and the media. In keeping with his message of moving forward, the President also spoke on the situation in Egypt, stressing the importance of peaceful, democratic action as a force for change. Highlights

The President Speaks on the Situation in Egypt
The President speaks out on the protests in Egypt, urging the Egyptian government to show restraint and address the legitimate grievances of the Egyptian people.

President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast
On Thursday, President Obama spoke at the annual National Prayer Breakfast, joining faith leaders from around the country.

Working Closer with Women Online
Yesterday, the White House brought together a diverse group of 25 online programming leaders who have touched millions of women across the country for a day of policy briefings and a candid discussion of how to work more closely together.  

Race to the Top Commencement Challenge: Winning the Future by Out-Educating the World 
On Tuesday, the President launched his second annual Race to the Top Commencement Challenge, which invites public high schools across the country to demonstrate how their school best prepares them for college and a career. Many of these schools are helping America win the future by out-educating our competitors, preparing today’s students for the jobs of tomorrow,  and achieving President Obama’s goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.

President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton hosted the annual meeting of the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. Cabinet-level officials participated in the meeting, including the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General, and the Secretaries of Interior, Agriculture, Labor, Health & Human Services, and Homeland Security.
