Weekly Women’s Update

Welcome to this edition of the Council on Women and Girls Weekly Highlights. As we close out Women’s History Month, the President took a moment to honor Geraldine Ferraro as a trailblazer who broke down barriers for women. This was also an important week because of the President’s speech on our energy future. In addition, members of the Administration participated in a live web chat on women, education, and workplace flexibility. Read about this and other events throughout the Administration below.

White House Forum Commemorating Women’s History Month
On Monday the White House hosted an event commemorating Women’s History Month and the 100th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. This video features remarks by Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, and Senior Advisor to the President, Valerie Jarrett, and a panel discussion of women workers telling their stories of attempts to organize a union in their workplaces.

Welcome to the Council on Women and Girl’s weekly highlights. This week, President Obama dedicated his weekly address to discussing Women’s History Month and the importance of fair pay, and committed the Administration to reforming No Child Left Behind so that all families have the resources they need to thrive. The President also offered his condolences and support to the victims of the recent earthquakes and tsunami in Japan, and answered questions at a press conference that help clarify how international conflict in countries like Libya affects us here in the United States.

Highlights

President Obama’s Statement on Libya
The President says that the United States stands ready to act as part of an international coalition if Moammar Qaddafi does not immediately stop attacks on civilians and honor the terms of a cease-fire agreement.

The Ongoing Response to the Earthquakes and Tsunami in Japan
Our thoughts and our prayers remain with the people of Japan. The President has been kept fully briefed on developments and the response throughout the week. As directed by the President, we have offered our Japanese friends whatever assistance is needed as America will stand with Japan as they recover and rebuild.
