WHAT DOES THE WOMEN’S RESOURCE CENTER DO?
We help people connect, cope and have hope.
The WRC offers New Choices, a program specifically for displaced homemakers and underemployed and unemployed adults. New Choices provides encouragement and support during times of transition: family breakup, job loss, financial downturns, health issues and other situations that prevent personal self-sufficiency. New Choices offers free individual coaching, self-sufficiency planning, and individual goal setting. Limited financial assistance may be available for tuition assistance, books, and transportation if returning to school is advisable. A reduced fee legal consultation is available for people dealing with family law issues.
Who is a Displaced Homemaker?
A Displaced Homemaker is a person who has worked primarily in the home providing unpaid services to the family while being dependent on someone else for the majority of financial support. While this person may have worked outside the home as well as being the homemaker, they did not earn the primary family income. Because of a change in the family situation, the homemaker must find employment to support themselves and possibly the family. As a displaced homemaker, this person is having difficulty finding employment due to a lack of education, substantial work experience, or skills required for the current job market. New Choices is designed to help displaced homemakers move toward self-sufficiency and stability.
